Beer Versus Wine: Where Do You Stand?

Beer Versus Wine
beer versus wineDo we live in a beer versus wine world? One where they coexist? Do you know people who love beer but eschew wine? Have nothing but praise for wine but disdain for beer? I was asked by Denise Sakaki of the charming and enthusiastic food and drink blog, Wasabi Prime, to chime in on this issue in her latest Sense Memory post for Honest Cooking.

So what’s your stance?

I definitely drink wine more often than beer, but I love a good craft beer. And I have to say when I’m faced with a situation of unfamiliar beers and wines,I’m more likely to gamble on a beer than a wine. I’ve found I have better chances of getting something drinkable if meh with beer than with wine.

      Dana,

Though I have a gambler’s mentality when it comes to unfamiliar wines on a list, I agree that having the beer default available can be a safe (if somewhat dull) bet. If only all wine and beer lists included at least a few compelling choices!

      Thank you for your comment.

Jameson – Actually I’m with you in choosing an unfamiliar wine when the wine list was clearly put together with some thought. It’s when the wine choices are few and uninspired that I’ll take the safer beer option. A good example from this past weekend – my wife and I were out with friends at a new (to us) restaurant. The wine list was small, about a half dozen each of reds and whites almost all unfamiliar. We went with a picpoul from France and it was wonderful and went very well with our meals.

i usually have wine with food, and beer when i just feel like drinking. with summer rolling in, i feel like i’ll be drinking a lot more beer from a can than wine from a glass over the next few months.

wine is like a steak, and beer is like a burger. sure, steaks are higher quality, but sometimes a burger just hits the spot

      Gabe,

I totally know what you mean. Sometimes you just want something simple, uncomplicated, but still delicious. I like discovering “burger wines” as well; wines that are good values with distinct flavors are always exciting to come across.

      Thank you for your thoughts.

‘burger wine’. lol. i like it. i used to call cheap italian reds ‘pizza wine’, so maybe i can call cheap american reds ‘burger wines’.
